On July 22, 2008, "[i]n response to an increase in charges of religious discrimination, increased religious diversity in the United States, and requests for guidance from stakeholders and agency personnel investigating and litigating claims of religious discrimination," the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued a new Compliance Manual section regarding religious discrimination in the workplace. The new section does not reflect a drastic change in EEOC policies, but is more comprehensive and user-friendly than the prior version. The section covers five major legal topics: coverage issues, disparate treatment analysis, harassment analysis, reasonable accommodation analysis, and related forms of discrimination.

Discrimination Charges Filed With EEOC Remain at Record Levels.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reported that it a record number of discrimination charges in FY 2009, the second-highest number in its history. Race and sex discrimination continued to be the most frequently filed, but religion, disability and retaliation claims all reached new highs. EEOC investigates and enforces claims of discrimination under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA).


Retaliation Claims Continue to Rise, Lead the Pack at the EEOC
From 1997 to 2008, race discrimination was the most frequently asserted claim by individuals filing charges of discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Since 1997, race discrimination has been asserted in approximately 35% of all EEOC charges.
